On-Road Motorcycles

Most motorcycles that you’ll look at will be considered on-road models, or models that are meant to be ridden on established roads. Below you’ll find the most common types of motorcycles along with some of their defining features and uses.

  1. Touring motorcycles are made to perform well in long-distance riding. They have features that prioritize comfort, storage, and fuel efficiency.
  2. Cruisers are typically known as American motorcycles and have a style that nods to classic riding. They generally have large V-twin engines and place the rider in a position where they’re slightly leaning back.
  3. Sport bikes prioritize speed and performance. They have quick acceleration, braking, and handling to give the rider control. They have a lightweight frame and place the rider in a slightly aggressive position, making them lean forward as they ride.
  4. Utility motorcycles are models that have been specifically designed for use in utility settings and jobs. They have great stability and specialized storage options for the specific job at hand.
  5. Trikes are part of the motorcycle category, but they are three-wheeled models. These provide extreme stability and don’t require as much balance from the rider.

Off-Road Motorcycles

Some motorcycles are designed to operate in an off-road setting, like on trails or open spaces.

  1. Dirt bikes are the most common off-road motorcycle. They have larger and taller tires in order to ride on uneven terrain. These models are commonly used in racing and recreation.
  2. Dual-purpose motorcycles can function on or off the road. They may also be referred to as an adventure bike because they’re street legal but capable of tackling rougher terrain.
